The White Island is an excellent place, ideal for taking kitesurfing lessons. It is a tongue of sand located just 25 minutes north of Cancun and an hour and a half north of Playa del Carmen, within an immense and shallow lagoon of precious salt water.
In this place it is possible to kitesurf safely, in shallow and calm water. Located on a small peninsula of white sand beaches and virgin jungle, it is a secret corner, and a great escape from the traffic and hustle and bustle of the city of Cancun Quintana Roo.
Isla Blanca is the ideal place for the 'Northerns', since due to its location, the wind arrives onshore unlike other parts of the Riviera Maya. It is a perfect place to learn to kitesurf, because the depth of the lagoon is practically hip deep everywhere. You will be able to walk and hold your kite in the air while you return in case you drift or have any difficulties.
The windy season is from November to June . The winds are constant and can vary from south to north. November through April is called “Northern Season” because the winds are affected by cold fronts from the north coming from the United States and Canada. When the wind comes from the north, it is strong (10-30kn) and can be cold, so a 4/3mm or 5/3mm wetsuit is recommended. As soon as the wind turns to the east and southeast (which it usually does), a wetsuit is no longer needed as the temperature rises. From April to May the wind is always hot, averaging 10 - 25 km/h.
From Cancun by car. Take Av. Bonampak to the North, cross Av. López Portillo and keep going. Continue along this same avenue until it comes to an end at the entrance to Playa Mujeres. There you will come across a roundabout. Continue along the street that surrounds Playa Mujeres, its gardens and golf course until you reach another roundabout. This second roundabout marks the start of a new road to Isla Blanca. Follow this path until it becomes a dirt road. Continue along the dirt road for a few more km. You will pass in front of the Pirata Morgan entrance, and further on, on the left, is the lagoon side entrance. If you want to go to the point to enjoy the best flat water conditions with winds from E-SE and SOUTH, you should follow the road to the bottom, leave the car and walk a bit.
